Born and raised in Hefei, Anhui Province, China, Xiong Renkai now is a Master of Journalism candidate in the University of Hong Kong.

Inspired by the non-fiction works of V.S. Naipaul and Svetlana Alexievich, Xiong chose journalism as his major after entering Renmin University of China in 2017. He took both theoretical and practical courses there, studying the basic skills of interviewing and writing, learning about the dynamic relation between media, society and technology.

Apart from on-campus studies, Xiong also took several internships during his undergraduate years in Beijing. While writing for NorthPark, which mainly focused on the fast-growing youth culture in China, he explored many culture scenes in the city and had a deeper understanding of sub-culture, entertainment industry and the rise of consumerism among Chinese young people. In Meirirenwu, he reported social issues, such as a corruption scandal of a children charity foundation, or a city government in Yunnan seizing aid materials for COVID-19 of other areas.

Xiong hopes that in the future, his writing can not only report the facts, but also paint a larger picture of the society and human nature.
