XIE Qingyu is born in Shandong Province, Northern China. She came to Hong Kong in 2017 and finished her undergraduate study at Lingnan University. She used to major in English and Chinese translation, but during her study and debate activity, she found that she is more interested in culture, society, and related topics. In 2019, inspired by her journalist friend and social movements, she finally determined to become a journalist and started taking relevant classes to know more about this field and prepare herself as a journalist in the future. In her point of view, it is valuable that human rights and freedom are protected well in Hong Kong. She is grateful that she has such a chance to get to know these precious values. She believes the notion of the fourth power and media has the right to supervise the government to keep the society function well and to maintain the law and order. She is also an idealist. Seeing the media industry being hit by the National Security Law and the journalists being hurt, she feels that the
more difficult the time is, the more responsibilities she has the o defend these precious values for journalists and protect the voiceless in society.
Her first media-related job is in the Initium Media, where she writes posts on social media platforms according to the news articles that day. This job helps her to gain some basic writing skills and knowledge about how to organize stories well. Now she is a Master student in Journalism of Hong Kong University, and she hopes she can improve her abilities as a journalist in the future.
